Rhino Cake

Another super cool 3-d animal cake!! This was for a 5th birthday, with a request for a Rhino Head Cake. The actual cake is sculpted out of an 8" and 6" red velvet cake. It was covered in ivory fondant, airbrushed with different shades of silver and grey with fondant horns, ears, and party hat & blower. I have to say I'm really digging the 3-d sculpted cakes and hope to get more requests because they honestly turn out so cool that it even kind of amazes me sometimes :)

"Leah,
Just wanted you to know the beautifully crafted rhinocerous cake was just as delicious as it was impressive. All the business cards disappeared. I'm carving up the leftovers to share with neighbors. Thank you for making Robert's 5th birthday special.  -J"

Armadillo Cake

Now this cake was definitely a little out of my comfort zone! For one- I don't get a lot of requests to do animals/3-d sculpted, and two- armadillos scare the ever loving buttercream out of me!! But this Birthday Cake was for my neighbor, who I now know goes by "The Diller Killer" and all he wanted for his birthday was an armadillo cake. His wife requested the bullet holes- so that will be a nice little surprise for him.
The grass portion is a 10" square red velvet with cream cheese filling, covered in green buttercream, and the armadillo himself is also red velvet- yes think "Steel Magnolias". He is covered in ivory fondant, which I texturized, airbrushed, and luster dusted. He has little fondant ears, feet and tail, and face. How can he look so cute and cuddly- whilst dead, and covered in bullet holes??? That takes talent people :)

Day of the Dead Cake

I had an awesome time last night at the Lena Pope Home Sweetheart Dessert Fantasy Event at the Fort Worth Club! This was my second cake I submitted, with a "Day of the Dead" or Dia de los Muertos theme. The cake was red velvet on the bottom, strawberry in the middle, and red velvet on the top as well. The bottom and top layers were airbrushed black and green. The Skulls were made out of gumpaste, hand painted with food coloring. The "mosaic of tiles" on the middle layer were made out of fondant, and the flowers on top were made out of fondant and also airbrushed. What a fun, bright cake- right up my alley!
